The City of Casa Grande is honored to join communities across the nation in recognizing POW/MIA Recognition Day on Friday, September 15. The United States’ National POW/MIA Recognition Day is observed across the country on the third Friday of September each year to remember those who were prisoners of war (POW) and those who are missing in action (MIA), as well as their families.
In observance of the day, Mayor Craig McFarland has issued a proclamation declaring September 15 as “POW/MIA Recognition Day” in the City of Casa Grande, which will be presented at a POW/MIA Remembrance event starting in Peart Park, located at 350 E. 6th Street.
Starting at 7:00 am on September 15, local veterans and veteran organizations will gather at the Memorial at Peart Park where Mayor McFarland and City Council members will present the proclamation and lay a wreath. Afterwards, attendees will participate in a silent walk to the Vietnam Memorial at the park on Fourth Street for a short history and the laying of another wreath. The group will then walk to the Honoring/Hiring/Helping Our Heroes of Pinal County (HOHP) offices for a final reception and presentation.
“Today and every day, we express our sincerest gratitude to service members, veterans, military families, and all others who place themselves in harm’s way to defend the virtues of our great Nation,” said Mayor McFarland in his proclamation. “We must pay special tribute to the service members who, in defending our freedom and liberties, have sacrificed their own.”
Community partners responsible for the planning and coordination of this event include the American Legion Post 8, VFW Post 1677, Marine Corps League Detachment, Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, Palmer Miller, and Honoring/Hiring/Helping Our Heroes of Pinal County (HOHP).
For more information on the event, please contact Deputy City Manager, Steven Weaver at (520) 421-8600 or by email at steven_weaver@casagrandeaz.gov.
